On April 14, Jefferson Surgical Clinic hosted a vascular screening event at the main office location. In one day, 86 individuals took the opportunity to receive the ultrasound screenings, taking a proactive step in their vascular health.
We are appreciative of our amazing staff who came together to help this event run efficiently.

As pollen counts soar in the spring, so does the sneezing and wheezing.
There are reasons that allergy symptoms seem to worsen each year. A study in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology reported pollen counts are steadily on the rise and could double by the year 2040.
Jefferson Surgical Clinic’s Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department can help you better deal with the allergy symptoms you face at this time of year.
Making you miserable
Common allergens in the early springtime include pollens from trees such as cottonwood, maple, elm, birch, walnut and poplar trees. Although allergies are often attributed to flowering plants, their pollen is generally too heavy to be airborne and cause allergic reactions.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States with an estimated 140,000 new cases recorded each year.
It develops from malignant cells or tumors in the tissue of the colon or rectum. In many cases, these malignant cells begin as polyps in the lining of the colon. Adults often develop these benign polyps without any symptoms.
Symptoms
Similar to other diseases, symptoms vary for each patient. The most common warning signs include significant changes in bowel habits (for several weeks), bloody stools, persistent abdominal discomfort, fatigue and unexplained weight loss.
March is National Nutrition Month, and the team at Jefferson Surgical Clinic wants to help you and your family live a healthy lifestyle.
Eating As a Family
It’s been said that eating together as a family can improve the communication and relationships among family members. By eating together, children see the eating habits of their parents. Children are less likely to eat foods if they feel pressured, so make meal times a relaxed setting. It is also important to serve them foods that everyone likes to eat, and not pressure them to try foods you are not keen on.
Dinner has historically been designated as family meal time, but adjusting work schedules and extra-curricular activities can make it challenging for families to eat this meal together. As a result, many have shifted toward making breakfast the family meal.

Breakfast
Dress up your morning yogurt with fresh or frozen fruit, like this raspberry mango parfait, or perhaps a fruit platter with yogurt dip. Whole wheat pancakes with fruit are another great option.
Snacks
A great way to encourage kids (and some adults) to reach for fruits and vegetables as a snack is to dress them up. Try these apple nachos, or veggies with dip (such as mustard dip, hummus or creamy cucumber-dill dip.)

Winter is in-full-gear; so is cold and flu season. While the likelihood of at least catching a cold each winter is high, are you prepared if/when you get sick?
Know the Difference
Colds and flu share some symptoms, such as coughing and congestion. With a cold, many can function through their daily routine (though with the inconvenience of the stuffy nose). A person with the flu, however, will find they do not have the energy to get out of bed. Other flu symptoms include fever, sore throat and/or muscle aches.
Many people will make a New Year’s resolution, but most won’t keep it. Common resolutions people make include losing weight, eating better, reading more and to quit smoking.
While their desires may have been genuine, their motivation or tools may not have been the right ones to help them succeed. Here are a few ways you can keep your New Year’s resolution.

December is Seasonal Affective Disorder Awareness Month. This disorder is commonly referred to as the Winter Blues and affects about 5% of Americans. Shorter days, colder temperatures and holiday stress can all contribute to the Winter Blues.
Here are some tips for the staff at Jefferson Surgical Clinic to help you combat these seasonal blues.

At Jefferson Surgical Clinic, our staff is dedicated to helping people maintain healthy, happy lifestyles. This commitment goes well beyond the time our staff is working with patients at JSC.
In September, many members of our staff took part in two major fundraisers in Roanoke – Cure by Design and One Walk. Combined, the two events raised an estimated $450,000 for cancer research and funding juvenile diabetes research.
While summer is a great opportunity for many people to enjoy the outdoors, it can be a painful time – both physically and emotionally – for those with varicose veins.
Varicose veins occur when one-way valves are unable to pump blood to the heart and the blood pools at the bottom of the vein. Warm weather and exercise can cause these veins to increase in size and appearance, as well as become very painful.
Here are some tips to help reduce these symptoms this summer:
As you age, your upper and lower eyelids often begin to droop and appear puffy due to weakened muscles and excess fat. In addition to making you look older and tired, these sagging eyelids can also affect your peripheral vision.
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that can improve the appearance of your eyelids and enhance your field of vision.
During this outpatient surgery, surgeons will create an incision where there is a natural crease in your eyelid and remove excess fat and skin to help improve the firmness of your eyelids. This extra firmness will help you look younger and more alert.
You can learn a lot about a person by their smile. In fact, you may even be able to tell how healthy they are.
That’s because doctors have discovered that good oral health is often linked to better health overall. When dentists come across problems inside your mouth, it can often mean there is a problem deeper within body.
"It’s over 130, I think, different systemic diseases that have some sort of oral sign or symptom,” said Dr. Joe Dill of Delta Dental. “It can be dry mouth, red spots, white spots, lumps, bumps, things like that. So dentists are really sort of the first line of seeing the results of something bigger going on in your body.”
